Additional information and needed forms are attached.

Many of the people who teach us about our faith, take us to church, and volunteer in the church are women. Women have an important and much needed role in our young lives including our spiritual upbringing. However, you are not growing up to be a woman in the church; you are growing up to be a man in the church. Men think and do things differently: We think about our relationship with God differently. We think about Church and ourselves differently than women. Basically, our whole understanding of spirituality is different than women. Because of these very fundamental differences, it is important that male high school students get away for a while and learn to embrace their healthy male spirituality. This is that invitation.
Come to Eagle Hurst Ranch near Steeleville, MO. Our first preference is that someone brings you to Eagle Hurst Ranch. If you need to drive yourself, we need you to park at St. Michael Parish in Steelville. The church is easy to spot on Highway 8 in Steelville. We need you there by 4:30 PM on July 26, 2009. We will be serving pizza for dinner at 5PM. There will not be Mass, so you will need to attend Mass that morning. We need you there for the entire camp experience which ends with lunch on Thursday, July 30. If you need to come late such as Monday or leave early such as Wednesday night, this is not the year for you to attend Camp Maccabee.
Eagle Hurst Ranch provides cabins. We would like to tell you what to bring so that you can get the most out of this camp/retreat experience:
Clothes : You will need hiking shoes/boots or shoes with good solid tread. You will need enough underwear, socks, shirts, shorts, and sleeping clothes for one week. We want shorts that fit you – as in covers what they were originally intended to cover. Shirts may not have any sayings on them except a sports team or spiritual writings (t-shirts you get from other spiritual camps or retreats are fine), modesty is expected.
Toiletries : whatever you use for the week, this is what you need to bring with you.
Medications will be kept with the Camp Maccabee staff. We will also have basic over the counter medications which will be given when deemed necessary only if the campers’ parent has signed the proper form.
We will have sunscreen and ointment for sunburns as well. You will need more than one towel. You will also need your swim gear since there is a swimming pool and we will be in other bodies of water. Camp Maccabee is a chance for you to grow in holiness, so bring your rosary. Men of God love Mary.
Men need a time to unplug and be with God in nature. You cannot do things with God if you remain plugged in, so as much of a challenge as this will be, you can rise to the challenge and meet it: unplug this week. That means do not bring cell phones, I-Pods or any other electronic music devices, video games, pagers, computers, etc. Also, if you bring tobacco products, alcohol, narcotics or firearms, you will be sent home. So leave those at home as well.
Linens are provided by camp, and extra snack food is not needed since it is also provided by the Camp Maccabee staff and Eagle Hurst Ranch. It would be good to have $20 in spending money. There is very little to no cell phone reception at the Ranch. Call the ranch for an emergency – the telephone number is 573-786-2625. We can call out if there is an emergency.
Young men on this retreat must have completed their freshman year of high school and may attend if they are in the summer after their senior year of high school.
Please realize there will be other people at Eagle Hurst Ranch during the time that we are at the facility. While we want members of Camp Maccabee to be friendly and courteous to everyone, we expect the members to stay together and interact with the members of the retreat. It is important also to note that men of God respect property, one another and those in charge of both Camp Maccabee and Eagle Hurst Ranch. Men of God do not use profanity, do not make fun of others, and do not whine. We expect you to come with the proper attitude to meet these challenges which will be enforced throughout the week.
Camp Maccabee will involve high school men from across our diocese representing many parishes. To make this an effective week, we are limiting the number who can participate.
