4th Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 30, 2005
Readings: Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13, Psalm 146: 6-10, 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
Today, we begin the cycle of readings in Matthew’s Gospel which is known as “The Sermon on the Mount.” It comprises Matthew, chapters 5-7, beginning with the Beatitudes. The word “beatitude” means blessing. So we read, “Blessed are the poor in spirit… Blessed are the meek… Blessed are you.” To be blessed means to be favored by the Lord. As Mary said in Luke’s Gospel, “For he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all will call me blessed.” With God’s favor comes happiness.
What we find in the Beatitudes which begin the Sermon on the Mount is a map to happiness. When we are poor in spirit, meek, mourning, hungering and thirsting for holiness, merciful, pure, peaceful, and persecuted, we are also favored by God. If we are open to God’s favor, we can be happy, truly happy, with the peace that surpasses understanding.
The readings that help us understand today’s gospel focus specifically on the idea of those who are poor. Zephaniah’s words speak specifically of the humble ones whom God will leave in the land, to help us find Him. Paul speaks specifically of the divine wisdom given to those who are humble by the world’s standards, to shame those whom the world considers wise.
True humility comes from knowing ourselves as we stand before God. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, humility is always mentioned in the context of prayer. Humility is self-knowledge, both of our strengths and weaknesses. True humility is seeing ourselves as God sees us. Of course, the only we can see ourselves as God sees us is to be in faithful conversation with him through daily prayer.
This is the first lesson the Church offers us in the liturgy as we begin to meditate on the Sermon on the Mount. In a daily commitment to make time for prayer this week, let us lay the foundation of blessedness by seeking true humility.
