FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Readings: Ezekiel 37: 12-14, Psalm 130,
Romans 8: 8-11, John 11: 1-45

This week we begin to anticipate Easter, the Resurrection of the Lord, with the raising of Lazarus from the dead. There is a Trinitarian mystery present in the resurrection of the dead.
The Father, in all eternity gives everything he is over to the Son. “Everything the Father has is mine,” says the Lord Jesus in John 16:15. The Father gives his life, divinity, power, majesty, glory, all that the Father is to his Son. In return, the Son receives the life, love, power of the Father. The Son reciprocates this gift, giving it back to the Father in love. This gift is so perfect that it becomes another living being with it’s own personhood, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the life, love, divinity, power and glory of the Father and the Son, mutually given and received from one to the other. This is what is happening in eternity.
This is what is happening in the incarnation of Christ. The Father gives life to his Son by sending his Holy Spirit upon the Blessed Virgin Mary. Jesus in return, makes of everything an offering back to the Father. Throughout Jesus’ life, he perfects the creation that original sin has wounded as offers this perfected creation back to the Father. This is his life long task. It is what he does at the moment his life ends, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” He gives all he has back to the Father. The Father honors this gift and continues to give his life and love to his Son, pouring his life and love into the beaten, wounded and dead body, so that Jesus, the eternal Son of God incarnate rises from the dead glorified in power.
What we hear about in the readings this weekend is our participation in this eternal self-giving of the Trinity. “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die,” Jesus says in today’s gospel.

The question for us this week is a question that asks us to examine our faith. It is the same question Jesus asked Martha, “Do you believe this?” Do we believe it enough to live our lives as a profession of faith in the living Christ?
