Divine Mercy Sunday
2nd Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy
April 3, 2005

Readings

When one looks at all the resurrection narratives of scripture, 3 things immerge in Jesus’ words and actions after he has been raised from the dead. First, Jesus makes clear that the Church is to be missionary, spreading the good news through the entire world. Second, Jesus speaks of the sacraments in veiled, but very real terms. Lastly, Jesus commissions his Apostles to be the ministers of these sacraments, telling them to teach, to preach, to heal the sick, to forgive sins, to share in his Thanksgiving meal.
In all the Sundays of Easter, we will hear repeated these instructions of Christ. In the Easter Triduum, we experienced, Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. This Sunday, we hear of the institution of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. “Who sins you forgive are forgiven them.” It is very clear that Jesus intends to give us a means to experience his Divine Mercy.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is just that. We tell Christ, represented by his ambassador the priest in this ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:20), all of the reasons that we are undeserving of his love. In this sacrament of mercy, we hear the priest, in person Christi, tell us we are forgiven.
Christ wants us to experience his presence, even now, 2,000 years after his life, death and resurrection. He has given us the sacraments in order that we will remain aware of his love and mercy. To abstain from the sacrament of reconciliation is to deprive ourselves of a great grace, of an Easter grace. We would deprive ourselves of a true experience of meeting face to face with our risen Lord, who wants us to receive his mercy.
Many of us were reconciled in this sacrament during Lent. Some of us were not. The challenge for all of us is to celebrate this sacrament, either for the first time in a long time or again after only a brief time, before the end of Easter. Let us meet the Risen Lord face to face in this sacrament before Pentecost.
