5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings: Isaiah 58: 7-10, Psalm Response; Psalm 112,
1Corinthians 2: 1-5, Matthew 5: 13-16,
What do you want people to say about you at your funeral? This may seem like a morbid attitude, meditating on our own death. St. Benedict in his great rule for his monks tells them to keep death before them always. The fact is, we are all going to die someday, and we will stand before our God. Maybe a more important question than the one just asked would be, “What do we want God to say about us after our funeral?”
Both questions are presented to us in the scriptures for this Sunday. In the Responsorial Psalm, we hear, “The just one shall be an everlasting remembrance.” Christ teaches us as we continue to meditate on his Sermon on the Mount that the world should see our good deeds and so be led to praise our Father in heaven for them.
As I think about my death I often wonder what people will say about me when I die. I want to live a life of generosity, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness to the Church and her teachings, so that when people gather at my funeral, they will recognize the work of God in me. This is not a morbid reflection at all. It is an honest acceptance of what will be.
When I stand before my God after I die, I want him to know that I’ve done the best I could to be his servant, and done the best I could to make reparation for the times when I have not been his servant.
As we read about what it means to be a just person in this weekends readings, can we examine our own lives with this thought in mind: What will people say about me when I die? What will God say to me when I stand before him?
