Readings: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14, Psalm 128: 1-5, Colossians 3:12-21, Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23
In the readings today, we are given an image of family that reflects the meaning intended by God. In the Genesis story, 1:26-28, we hear about the creation of the first family, male and female, with their command to be fruitful and multiply. Man and woman, created differently with different gifts, and yet bound together by their differences. A man can only be husband and father if there is a woman who is a wife and mother. A woman can only be a wife and mother if there is a man who is a husband and father. It is their differences, their complimentarity of gifts that bind them together and make them who they are.
In the first reading, we hear about the love of the father and mother for their children, and the honor with which the children are to hold their father and mother. In the second reading, we hear about the attitudes that can bind the family together and make it a holy family, forgiveness, compassion, kindness humility, self-sacrificing love. And in the gospel, we see the Holy Family, each with their own gifts, Joseph acting as protector and guardian, Mary acting as nurturer and caretaker, and the Christ child who goes with them obediently and humbly. Each one acting out who they are according to their gifts and abilities.
Perhaps this week, we can reflect on our own families. What gifts do we have that we offer to our family for the good of the other members? What special gifts can we recognize in the other members of our family?
