Second Sunday of Advent
Readings: Isaiah 11:1-10. Psalm 72, 1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17.
Romans 15:4-9. Matthew 3: 1-12 The devil was sitting around with his executive committee, trying to think of ways to keep Christians from being faithful. One of his underlings said, We could try to convince them that God doesn’t exist.
No. Said the big boss, We’ve done that. Got a few, too, but I don’t think that’s what we’re looking for.
Another demon offered We could try to convince them that you don’t exist
Did that one, too. Satan responded, Got a few more, but it’s old hat.
One devil, an especially sly one who moved up quickly in the ranks, said, We could convince them that there’s no hurry.
Satan pointed his finger at this demon and smiled, Let’s get started.
As we continue, as a Church, reflecting on the coming of Christ on this Second Sunday of Advent, we look again at the second coming of Christ at the end of time.
And we hear the message loud and clear:
Repent! For the kingdom of heaven is at hand!
While Advent with its hope and peacefulness and quiet meditation time often is not thought of a season for penance, it certainly points us in that direction clearly enough. Have we come face to face with those things that separate us from Christ? Are we ready to stand before our God who will ask us for an accounting of our lives?
Everyone needs to repent, for we are all sinners. It is time to repent, to say we’re sorry in the sacrament of Reconciliation, and to make amends through prayer, penance and charity. We should repent, and we should do it now. We will stand face to face with our God, whether it is at his Second Coming in Glory, or at our journey to him in death. Let us not wait until it is too late.
