Beginning of National Vocation Awareness Week
Scripture Readings: Isaiah 60: 1-6, Psalm 72, Ephesians 3: 2-3a, 5-6,
Matthew 2: 1-12
Herod is always an interesting character to me. The King of Judah, he was disturbed by the events reported to him by the Magi when they came seeking the newborn King of the Jews. What was he so afraid of?
I can’t help but think that he was probably afraid of losing his own lordship. He was the king. He had a lot of power. He could do what he wanted, when he wanted, how we wanted to do it. There’s no compromising with that. Herod was the lord of his own life.
Now, here comes this child to threaten Herod’s lordship. What would Herod have to give up in order to let this new king have his reign?
How often is this how we approach the Christ Child? Jesus is meant to be Lord of Heaven and Earth. He is the one who will unite all peoples everywhere. Do we allow him to be Lord of our lives? Do we seek his will in all things, rather than our own?
How do we make him our Lord? Prayer. I cannot emphasize it enough. We must pray to Jesus if he is to be our Lord. Daily, devotedly, deeply.
A little practice that I picked up sometime ago is that I look at my calendar in the morning, and the list of things that I need to accomplish through the day. Then I offer them to God. “Lord, this is what I have planned today,” I say. “Give me your insight and wisdom to do these things according to your will. And help me to know your will for the things that you have planned for me to day of which I am still not aware.”
Can we start each day from now on with a prayer to seek the Lord’s will in our lives?
