Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

Sunday, January 9, 2005
Readings: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7, Psalm 29: 1-4, 9-10, Acts 10:34-38,
Matthew 3:13-17

We remember today the baptism of the Lord, Jesus’ anointing by the Father to be priest, prophet, and King. This is remembered with each baptism celebrated in the Catholic Church.
When someone is baptized, the person is anointed with the Sacred Oil of Chrism, blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass during Lent. At this mass when the Bishop blesses the oils, the priests of the diocese renew their commitment to continue priestly ministry in the Church. This year in our Diocese, the Chrism mass will take place in the evening of March 17, and all are always invited.
The priest or deacon celebrating baptism anoints the newly baptized with the Oil Chrism, and in the accompanying prayer, says these words: “As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet and King, so may you live always as a member of his holy people.”
In baptism we are anointed spiritual priests, members of “a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5). What spiritual sacrifice can we offer to God?
In baptism, we are anointed to be prophets, that we “may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). What can we do this week to proclaim the wonder and power of God in our lives?

In baptism, we are anointed Kings and Queens, members of a “chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people” (1 Peter 2:9). This week, as members of the royal house of Christ, how can we lead others to Him who has given us such a high dignity?
