Readings: Acts 2:1-11, Psalm 104, 1 Corinthians 12: 3b-7, 12 -13, John 20: 19-23
"Lord, send out your spirit and renew the face of the earth!"
Psalm 104
In the words of absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the priest says, “God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son, has reconciled the world among us, and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins.” Imagine! The very purpose of the Holy Spirit is to reconcile.
There is so much division in our world today. The Church is divided into denominations and factions. The world is divided into “us vs. them.” Our nation is divided on issues as fundamental as life and death. Our families can become torn by strife and hardship. Our very selves, and individuals can feel the torment of that lack of integrity that is a result of original sin and experienced in personal sin. There is still much need for reconciliation in our world and in our lives today, 2,000 years after the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Receiving the Holy Spirit, really receiving the Holy Spirit, not just paying it lip service, demands a great deal of self-sacrifice. It demands humility to know where there is sin in our lives and animosity between us and our neighbor. It demands thanksgiving, even during the hard times of suffering and pain. It demands obedience to the Church, who is bulwark of Truth and the Body that holds the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is ready to work its power of reconciliation and communion in our lives. Are we ready to receive the Spirit of Wonder, Awe, Reverence, Strength, Understanding, Counsel and Knowledge? What spiritual practices and disciplines do we still need to bring into our lives in order to truly live the life of the Spirit?
