The Incarnation! The great mystery of our faith of which we profess that Jesus is True God and True Man. Boy, what does that mean?
The Son of God has existed in eternity with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. When the time was right according to God’s plan, the Son of God entered the Virgin Mary’s womb by the power of the Holy Spirit, and took on real human flesh, real human blood. He was given a human name, Jesus, which means God saves. Jesus was the fulfillment of the ancient prophecies that Emmanuelle would come, God is with us. These two names can sum up for us what the meaning of the incarnation is.
Take this all of you and drink from it. This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. The covenant that we remember each time we celebrate the Mass is the promised Emmanuelle. In Jesus’ human blood is the covenant, the bond between God and humanity. For in Jesus’ human blood is the very essence of God. The ancients believed that in the blood of a creature was contained the very essence of that creature. In the blood of Christ is contained the very essence of God and humanity, forever bound together in Christ Jesus. God is with us, forever, in the blood of the new and everlasting covenant.
It will be shed for you and for all, so that sins may be forgiven. In the Eucharist, we come face to face with the reality of our sins, sins that caused the death of an innocent man on a cross. But this is not an empty and meaningless punishment; this is a willing sacrifice that saved us from the eternal punishment we deserve. Jesus, by pouring out his blood for us, saved us. In Jesus, God saves us.
Do this in memory of me. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, we remember the closeness of our God, who created us simply because he wanted us to be with him. And when we separated ourselves from him in sin, God saved us through his Son so that we can still be with him. What does the incarnation mean, it means God so loved the world that he sent his only Son, that whoever should believe in him might not perish, but might have eternal life.
