Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Readings: Deuteronomy 8;2-3, 14b-16a, Psalm 147, 1 Corinthians 10: 16-17, John 6: 51-58
Without the Eucharist, there would be no Church. It really is that simply. We receive the Body of Christ to become the Body of Christ. We receive communion to become Communion.
The Eucharist is the source of our life as Church. It is in the Eucharist that the Holy Spirit enters into the Church. We pray for this in each Eucharist prayer. We ask the Lord to send the Holy Spirit upon the gifts of bread and wine in order that they may become the Body and Blood of Jesus. Then “as we receive from this altar the sacred body and blood of Jesus,” we pray that “we will be filled with the Holy Spirit and become one Body, one Spirit in Christ.” Each celebration of the Eucharist is a new Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit is poured into the hearts of the faithful in ever new ways.
The Eucharist is the summit of our life as Church. Heaven is described in the book of Revelations and throughout the scriptures as a wedding banquet, in which Christ the Bridegroom celebrates with his Bride the Church the covenant of unity that God our Father has made with us in his Son, in which the two, God and Man, have been made one. It is the act of total self-offering between the Bridegroom and Bride, in which the Bridegroom offers his body to his Bride and the Bride in return gives herself to her husband. It is the total sharing of life and love, divinity, power, majesty, and glory of God with humanity. It is heaven on earth. The angels and saints are gathered with us around the altar and sing, “Holy, holy, holy!”
Do we really believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, or do we only pay his real presence lip service?
How can we better prepare ourselves for this most sacred union with God?
