Second Sunday of Lent
February 20
2nd Sunday of Lent
Readings:
So often we can become distracted by the seemingly unfairness of our lives. We are made to suffer because of the sins of other people. We try to live a good life, but find ourselves struggling with pain, sickness, or the sickness of a loved one, while we see people who are obviously not interested in living close to the Lord float through life trouble-free. Jesus says this to us specifically in the gospel of this week, “The sun rises on both the good and the bad, and the rain falls on the just and the unjust.”
Ultimately, we come to terms with the fact that we have very little control over the things that happen to us in this life. I think of Lance Armstrong, who has broken records for winning the Tour de France bicycle race more than anyone else. The man trained his whole life to race, only to be diagnosed with a severe form of cancer. He met the disease head on, and not only recovered, but continued to compete and win. He did not let life beat him.
What do we have control over? While we cannot control whether or not we get sick, or how other people are going to treat us, we can control our response to these things. We can decide for ourselves whether we want to allow the suffering and pain of life to make us bitter and angry and resentful. Or we can decide to meet the pain of this life with faith, knowing that God’s plan is greater than our own.
This is the example of Abram, whom the Lord called to leave his ancestral home, his family, and begin a journey in faith. This is the instruction of Paul, who tells us to “bear (our) share of hardship for the sake of the gospel, with the strength provided by God.” This strength that comes from the faith we have that Christ Jesus “destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”
We cannot control what things will happen to us in this life, but we can control our response. Responding in faith, we can be holy, as the Father in heaven is holy.
As we prepare for this week of Lent, imagine in your daily prayer a situation that may occur that day that may challenge you or cause you some suffering. In prayer, imagine how you can respond to that situation with faith in God and his love in your heart.
