Readings

The Church, this week again, is emphasizing the presence of Christ in his Apostles, and in their successors, the bishops. They are to carry on the work of Christ, “Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.”
The bishops, as the Vicars of Christ within a diocese, are the ministers of the sacraments par excellence within their diocese. The priests and in a more limited way the deacons share in the bishops sacramental ministry, but it is the bishop who ordains them and commissions them as his collaborators. Out of a deep faith in Christ, a bishop is able to work greater works that Christ in the sacraments because Christ is with the Father giving them the Holy Spirit to empower them.
Because Jesus is now in heaven with his Father, the bishops, and their collaborators the priests, are able to make Christ present in every Church on every altar.
Because Jesus is now in heaven with his Father, the bishops and their priests are able to heal the sick in a way more profound than a physical cure. In anointing, they are able to prepare to strengthen the soul, not just the body.
Because Jesus is now in heaven with his Father, the bishops and priests are able to minister reconciliation as the Lord’s ambassadors to a multitude of people.

Have we truly recognized and appreciated the role of the bishops in our Catholic Church?
