Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeREADINGS: Wisdom 1: 13-15, 2: 23-24, Psalm 30, 2 Corinthians 8: 7, 9, 13-15, Mark 5: 21-43
"I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me!"
In the Gospel reading for today, we have a typical Markan technique of "sandwiching" one story in the middle of another. We start out with the story of Jairus requesting that Jesus come to his house to heal his 12 year old daughter. On the way, Jesus heals a woman who has suffered hemorrhaging for 12 years. In using this technique Mark invites us to interpret the two stories in light of each other.
In both stories, Jarius and the woman must overcome their fear so that Jesus can perform his work. They must have faith. Jesus tells Jarius, "Do not be afraid; just have faith."
How do we approach Jesus in our lives? Do we approach in fear or faith? How often do we have fears and anxieties and allow them to consume us? Are we willing to approach Jesus and lay our concerns before him? Are we willing to touch the hem of his garment and trust that he will take our concern as his own?
The raising of the young girl foreshadows Jesus' own resurrection. On the 9th Sunday in Ordinary Time we saw Jesus as the Lord of the Sabbath. In the 12th Sunday in OT, Jesus is the Lord over the raging seas. Now, we see Jesus established as the Lord of Life.
Jesus performed miracles in both of the stories based on the faith of both individuals.
Do we expect to experience miracles in our own life?
