Solemnity of the Epiphany

Readings: Isaiah 60:1-6, Psalm 72: 1-2, 7-8, 10-13, Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6
Matthew 2:1-12
Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. The word “epiphany” means a manifestation, or a revelation. The three Magi come from lands far away, following a star to find the Lord. This is a celebration of the universality of the Church, that all people are invited to worship the one God. It is also a celebration of the Glory of God. God’s wonder and power, his presence is revealed in the star, in the child, in the Holy Family, in all of the events of the Christmas season. God’s glory is that which makes his presence known.
One aspect of this solemnity that we may not think about is how we as Church are called to be the glory of God, the revelation of his presence. As Isaiah points out in that first reading: “Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you… Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance.”
The Church is the New Jerusalem, which is filled with the radiance of Jesus, her Lord and loving Spouse. The Church is called to be a light to the nations, guiding people by the teachings of Jesus to ways of peace. This is true of the universal Church throughout the world. How much more true it is of the domestic Church, the family!
As we think about how we as Church are called to be the light to the nations, the glory of God, the revelation of God’s presence in our world, what can our family do this week to truly help build a community of peace so that Christ’s life in our families can be seen by all?
