15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Readings: Isaiah 55; 10-11, Psalm Response: Luke 8:8, Romans 8: 18-23, Matthew 13: 1-23

Did you ever have a lesson in school, or maybe at a work conference, or any situation where you were supposed to learn something, but you just didn’t get it? That’s the way we can feel in so many of the situations we find in our Christian life. People can wonder what this event in their life means, or why that person stepped into their lives at a particular moment. There are times when all we can do is sit at the feet of the Mystery of God, and wonder at his plan.
The Gospel of this Sunday tells us that this is the way that many people must have experienced the ministry and teaching of Jesus. Huge crowds followed him, so many people that he had to get into a boat and go a little distance of shore so that he could teach them without being crowded by them. And yet, we see in the disciples’ question that many people did not really understand what he was saying. He had to explain some of his teachings in private to his intimate friends. To many, his teachings would not become clear until much later.
This is what can happen to us at times. The Church offers us the teachings of Christ, and helps us to interpret his teachings. There are some teachings, however, that we might not understand right away. I think especially of some of the moral teachings such as contraception, abortion, fetal stem cell research, being careful with our votes in election years. There are some who because they do not understand what the Church teaches decide to not follow what the Church teaches.
The Word of God and the teaching of Christ are not in vain, however. Even if we do not understand the teachings, we can still live according to them. As a matter of fact, by living according to them can help us understand them. The Word of God will water the gardens of our hearts and minds and nurture the fruit of understanding and wisdom. The Word of God will bare fruit if we allow it in our hearts.

What teachings of the Church do we still not understand? Can we put our trust in God by living according to those teachings, and so allow ourselves to slowly grow in understanding of them?
