3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Scripture Readings: Jonah 3: 1-5, 10, Psalm 25, 1 Corinthians 7: 29-31, Mark 1: 14-20
In these scriptures, we hear a message of repentance. Jonah goes throughout the city of Nineveh, after having experienced his own conversion of sorts if we remember the story. The people of Nineveh respond by turning away from their sinful ways in prayer and fasting. The Lord’s mercy is generous, and he decides not to destroy the city.
Then we hear the words of Jesus, the call to repentance. In the gospel we see the example of Andrew and Peter, James and John, who left behind their former way of life to follow the Lord’s will for them.
I often think change of heart is much easier than change of mind, but we called to convert both heart and mind to the Lord. We change our hearts, opening them in love, and that feels rewarding. Loving comes easy to us. Sometimes, though, our way of thinking is challenged. Ideas and preconceptions that we have may not be in union with the teaching of the Church, which is guided by the Holy Spirit. We think we’re right, and the Church is wrong, even though it is the Church has the promise of the Holy Spirit who guides into all truth, and not me personally. Rather than letting go of our ideas, we stubbornly cling to them, and do not allow our minds to be formed in truth to the same degree that we allow our hearts to be formed in love.
St. Paul in the second reading reminds us that everything in this world is passing away. Even those relationships that are most important to us, while not lost in eternal life, are changed in eternal life. With this regard, we should remember that the only thing that lasts into eternity is the love and truth of Jesus Christ. His love in our hearts inspires us; his truth in our minds instructs us.
How can we open our hearts to Love more like Christ?
In what areas do we still need to open our minds to be more formed by his Truth?
