January 1, Mary, Mother of God:
Readings: Numbers 6:22-27, Psalm 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8, Galatians 4:4-7, Luke 2: 16-21
We have heard some very challenging passages this past week, especially on the Feast of the Holy Family (Colossians 3: 18-21, which concluded the second reading of that day). If not properly understood, these passages can be quite dangerous to the family, because they seem, on a superficial level, to support the subjugation of women and children to male domination. In their document, When I Call for Help: A Pastoral Response to Domestic Violence Against Women, the Bishops of the United States wrote, “As bishops, we condemn the use of the Bible to support abusive behavior in any form. A correct reading of Scripture leads people to an understanding of the equal dignity of men and women and to relationships based on mutuality and love.”
Today, we celebrate the feast of Mary, the Mother of God. This is, above all, a feast of the celebration of the particular gifts of femininity, of womanhood. Only women can be mothers. The particular gifts of women in the relationships of marriage and family should be honored and celebrated. The notion of authority as dominance or power has no place within the family.
Authority within the family, rather, lies in the particular gifts of each member. The husband and father has particular gifts that are his, and his alone, and they should be respected. The wife and mother has particular gifts that hers, and hers alone, and they should be respected with equal dignity and reverence. The children within the family each contribute, in as much as they are capable, to the good of the family with gifts that are particularly theirs, and their gifts should be shown proper respect.
As a response to the degradation of women, which has been past experience in the practice of the Church, the Church holds up in her teaching Mary, wife and mother, in honor, love and reverence.
As we reflect on the readings for our celebration of Mary, Mother of God, what can we do, by some real action, to show love and respect for our mothers, wives, and sisters this week? How can we deepen our respect for the gifts that the women in our families offer?
