33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings: Proverbs 31: 10-13, 19-20, 30-31, Psalm 128, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, Matthew 25: 14-30
We have all been given “grace upon grace” (John 1:16) through Jesus Christ our Lord. Our families and friends are the most obvious. We have been given time in this life to be truly the servants of the Lord, and this time is a grace filled time. We have been given talents; so many talents enrich our parish family of St. Peter.
In the scriptures today we are given examples of those who use their talents for the service of the Lord. The faithful wife in the first reading from Proverbs uses her talents in service to her family and the poor, and what great reward awaits her!
The psalm responds to this reading, “Blessed are those who fear the Lord!” This reminds us of the verse earlier in the book of Proverbs that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 1:7) When we “fear the Lord,” we stand in awe of his wonder. We reflect on his majesty and power and generosity and love, and we see that every good thing we have comes from him.
Until we see clearly the gracious love of God, how undeserving we are, and how much he loves us anyway, we really haven’t touched the mystery of what it means to be a Christian, a human in communion with that love. God has given us his love.
There is an old poem that ends, “Love wasn’t put in your heart to stay: love isn’t love until you give it away.” God has not poured his gifts out to us, showered his love upon us, for us alone. He has given us his gifts so that they may grow and be shared. As a matter of fact, God expects us to let his love grow among us so that when he comes to us, we can offer him his love back with growth.
How have we done in sharing God’s love?
What ways can we better share God’s love so that we will be ready to meet him when he comes?
