"Let all the earth cry out to God with joy!"
6th Sunday of Easter
Readings: Acts 8: 5 -8, 14-17, Psalm 66, 1 Peter 3:15-18, John 14; 15-21
We hear so much about joy in this weekend’s readings. Joy is presented as one of the marks of a true Christian community. I think so often we can misunderstand what joy really is, however.
So many people think of joy as a wild emotional state of “being up,” as if we were at a pep rally or a ball game in which our team is doing really well. While that can be an experience of enthusiastic excitement, I don’t think it accurately reflects the Christian meaning of joy.
Christian joy is an expression of knowledge, I think, a knowledge that tells us that no matter what may be happening, everything is going to be right in the end. It is that sense of exhilaration we feel in the knowledge of true faith in our God’s goodness. We can experience real joy even when suffering, because we know that “God has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Of course, experiencing this kind of joy takes a deep faith, especially in the face of suffering.
Do we believe the words of scripture that tell us that Christ has already won the victory? Do we reflect true Christian joy in our parish community?
